Leaves are falling from the trees and covering the ground with orange , golden and red. Soon these leaves will compost and fertilize the land. Animals are going into hibernation and trying to eat so much food as they can to fatten up. The days are getting much shorter and the darkness comes over the land. Nature is dying down to rest and the energy of the land goes inward. A good time to reflect on our life’s and to honour our life and death. Like all in nature we also will one day die a physical death just to be reborn again. We may even experience often a non physical death were we are reborn in a spiritual way.
Looking at a deeper sense of Samhain gives us a feeling of timelessness. In ancient Ireland a great gathering which was called the “The feast of Tara” was celebrated. It is suggested that it was mainly held for the renewal of the kingdom and the kingship. A sacred fire was lit at the seat of the High King miles away at the burial place of Tlachtga the daughter of Mogh Ruith . She was one of the greatest Druids of Ireland. Her magical powers were mighty and she might have been once one of the old Celtic Goddesses that represented the land.
The King Druids casted offerings into the sacred fires to the Gods in thanksgiving the plentiful harvest, and with prayers for the new cycle to come.
The bonfires over the land were like an island of light in the coming dark time of the winter bringing warmth to the cold protecting against evil spirits as the veils are said to be thinner in the Great Spirit nights of the year. ( the other one are Beltane and summer solstice ). The ashes of this fires where spread on the land for protection in the winter and fertilize the soil.
In ancient Ireland it was said that the fairy mounds opened and the sidhe came to roam the land. Gwyn up Nudd ( king of the fairies)rode through the sky ( Wales ) for the great wild hunt like Wodan did in the northern spheres and Herne the Hunter or King Arthur in England.
Not all spirits where to be feared in this time of the year as also friendly and benevolent spirits ancestors came to visit to their old homes or families. The families of the departed ones left offerings of food and drink for them or eat together in memory with their ancestors.
This is a beautiful tradition and worth to keep. Perhaps you might like to set up an altar for your ancestors .With photos, candles and flowers. In honouring our ancestors were a thankful of their existence and the heritage of what they have left for us. Many old things are no longer useful and so Samhain is also a time were we free us from clutter in our homes but also in our minds and hearts.
We often have inherited thought forms, behaviour patterns , that no longer are beneficial in our life’s and may block us and make our journey through life harder. Write a list of what you want to let go of and burn it in the Samhain fire. You can do this with an outdoor fire or simply with a small candle on a fire prove saucer. Spread the ashes in the wind or on the soil.
As the veils are thin you may also like to get or give yourself a reading. Write down your dreams as they may entail what lies ahead of you. Listen to your inner voice and dream..

It is the time where the energy goes back into the earth and the hours of sunshine and light are getting less by each day. The heat of the summer is gone and nights can be chilly reminding us for the winter to come. Mother Nature is showing her beauty in turning the green into read, brown, orange and gold. The second harvest of grains, fruits, berries and nuts are the gift of mother earth in this time. Animals are preparing for the winter fattening their bellies for the hibernation or colder season to come. For us it is a time of harvesting some of our “seeds” we have sown out in that our plans and wishes are manifested. We sow our seeds( plans and wishes) and nurture them through positive visualization and feelings . Everything comes into manifestations through small single steps for all that we want to create. Sometimes our steps are very small and sometimes we make giant steps but at one point all our wishes are manifested. We may harvest some of our wishes now in this time of the season, but often we may have to wait longer as the time for manifestation differs. It takes 9 month for a baby to be born and at least 20 years to be grown up J Our continuing steps towards manifestation with trust love and gratitude will help us to gain a bountiful harvest when the time is right. This is a time of gratitude and to be happy what we have and to see the beauty around us.
